Typeset from original Bodoni letters and printed on handmade paper with Officina Bodoni watermark in 230 numbered copies. Binding somewhat tanned and slightly spotted, paper in front and back slightly foxy. Lower gutter a bit open on the inside. This is one of 225 copies on paper (5 copies were printed on vellum). Majestic edition, a very early Officina Bodoni from Huib van Krimpen’s collection, unfortunately not in perfect condition. No slipcase present.

(1785) ; in-4 ; plein veau havane moucheté, dos à nerfs, caissons décorés, pièce de titre rouge, triple filet doré d'encadrement des plats, toutes tranches dorées, roulette décorative dorée d'intérieur (reliure de l'époque) ; (2) ff. de titre et dédicace, XCIV pp., 100 pp., (1) f. d'achevé d'imprimer, portrait gravé d'Anacréon à la page de titre et vignette gravée par Cagnoni en tête de la dédicace. Seuls cinq exemplaires complets sont identifiés dans les bibliothèques publiques d'Italie. Superbe impression en caractères majuscules latins pour la première partie et grecs pour la seconde, chef d'oeuvre de typographie d'un des plus célèbres imprimeurs au monde. Imprimé sur papier fort, l'intérieur, grand de marges, petite auréole à l'angle supérieur, restaurations anciennes aux coiffes, aux mors, aux coins et sur le premier plat, charnières faibles ; malgré ces quelques défauts l'exemplaire reste exceptionnel par la beauté de la typographie.

Small 8vo (in rs), 148 x 102 mms., pp. [iv], cxviii, [ii], 111 [112 blank], engraved portrait vignettes on first two leaves, printed entirely in capital letters, attractively bound in full vellum, with elaborate gilt roll on cover, spine richly gilt, black leather label, all edges gilt, blue silk end-papers; a bookplate appears to have been removed from the verso of the front free silk end-paper, binding very slightly soiled, but a very good to fine copy. This edition was produced by the distinguished Italian philologist Giovanni Cristofano Amaduzzi (1740 – 1792). Brooks: Compendiosa Bibliografia di Edizioni Bodoni (1927), no. 422, noting that Giuseppe de Lama in Vita del cavaliere Giambattista Bodoni tipografo Italiano e catalogo cronologico delle sue edizioni stated that the work was soon out of print, and that 150 copies were printed on "carta ducale," 12 on "carta di Annanay," 3 on vellum, and 3 also with the Greek text on vellum. G. P. Giani, in Catalogo delle autentiche edizioni Bodoni (1948), no. 17, states that 200 copies on "carta vergata ducale" (ducal laid paper) were printed but otherwise follows Brooks.

Autograph letter opening top left 'Paris, Le Citoyen Renouard l'ainé', top right: 'Parme ce / le 14 Aout 1798'. Signed 'Jean George Handwerck'. The recipient is the famous French bibliographer, bibliophile and collector A.A. Renouard. In the well written letter Handwerck, Director of the l'imprimerie Royale, mentions a number of Bodoni editions, recently produced and / or in the process of printing: 'Je viens de faire une très belle edition de Boethius Consolatione Philosophiae in grand in 4to et in 4o piccolo. cette edition dont on n'a tiré que 300 exemplaires [4to] e 200 in [4to piccolo] est LA PLUS BELLE DE TOUS LES OUVRAGES sortis des presses de cette imprimerie... J'imprime actuellement la traduction italienne de Varchi de cet ouvrage... J'ai réimprimé Characterum Ethicorum Theophrasti Eresii Capita Amadutia 1. volume in 4o... '. He sends 'Le Baptisterre' [Christening gift?] from his friend Feneulle to Citoyen Regnault. The Cossali arithmetica not printed yet.

Folded once into letter format of 8.7 x 10.7 cm. Some damage to righthand corner w. loss of a few letters, due to opening of seal. 24 lines of text in a fine, legible hand. Verso w. small collectors mark 'HLsrköln' [Heinrich Kaspar Lempertz Sr., see Lugt Marques des Collections, vol. I, item 1337; At least 11 auctions between 1905 and 1910; Associate and successor of the imprimerie-librairie Heberle in Cologne.). (Recto lower left 2 lines in different hand, probably Renouard's, '3 horaces in 8o de quoi completer un aldin [?] Gr. ... [?] (4to?]. Giambattista Bodoni [1740 - 1830], typographer, type designer, compositor, printer & founder of the world renowned printing & publishing house Bodoni in Parma. His type face designs and his compositor's work, reached an unrivalled degree of perfection, to some even to the point of mechanical perfection, resulting in a sterile and cold appearance. This letter written in autograph by J. George Handwerck, Bodoni's right hand man, Director of the firm & most important contributor to the business. The 'Citoyen Regnault', an acquaintance of Renouard, is probably Jean - Baptiste Regnault [1754 - 1829] painter and engraver, see Thieme-Becker, vol. XVIII, p. 87.
